The defining feature of a double eccentric butterfly valve is the geometric displacement of the shaft away from the centerline of the valve disc and body. This creates two distinct offsets (eccentricities):
First Offset: The shaft is displaced behind the plane of the sealing seat. This allows for a continuous, uninterrupted $360^\circ$ sealing surface.
Second Offset: The shaft center is shifted slightly to one side of the pipe and valve centerline.
Together, these offsets create a cam-like profile during operation. As the valve begins to open, the disc immediately lifts away from the resilient seat rather than scraping against it. Contact between the disc and the seat occurs only during the final few degrees of closure, virtually eliminating friction, preventing seat deformation, and significantly lowering the required operating torque.
