A trunnion-mounted valve indicates that the ball is constrained by bearings and is only permitted to rotate; most of the hydraulic load is supported by the System controls, resulting in low bearing pressure and no post fatigue. A trunnion ball valve is a condition of a quarter-turn valve which uses a loose, perforated and limited/supported ball to control flow through it. The line pressure forces the upstream seat against the stationary ball so that the line pressure forces the upstream center onto the ball, forcing it to seal. The mechanical anchoring of the ball grips the thrust from the line pressure, controlling excess variance between the ball and centers, so even at full-rated working pressure using, torque remains down.
